The 2002 Saab 9-3 is an excellent vehicle, but like any other, it can have its unique issues. One less common problem encountered with this vehicle is a leaky timing cover. This guide will show you how to repair this issue.
Tools Needed:
- Socket Set
- Screwdriver Set
- Drip Pan
- New Timing Cover Gasket
- Silicone Gasket Maker
- Torque Wrench
Steps:
Step 1: Remove the Battery and Battery Tray
Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. Once it's safe, remove the battery and the battery tray to gain better access to the timing cover.
Step 2: Drain the Coolant
Place your drip pan underneath the radiator drain plug and drain the coolant system.
Step 3: Remove the Timing Cover
Start by removing the serpentine belt. Then, using your socket set, remove the bolts holding the timing cover in place.
Step 4: Inspect and Clean the Timing Cover
Inspect the timing cover and area for any damage. Clean the cover and the cover seat on the engine of any residual gasket.
Step 5: Install the New Gasket
Apply a thin layer of silicone gasket maker to the timing cover seat on the engine, then place your new gasket on top.
Step 6: Reinstall the Timing Cover
Once the gasket is in place, reinstall the timing cover. Be sure to use your torque wrench to apply the correct amount of torque to each bolt per your vehicle's specific requirements.
Step 7: Refill the Coolant System
Refill your coolant system to the appropriate level and then replace your battery and battery tray.
Step 8: Inspect Your Work
Check to make sure everything is secured properly. Start your vehicle and let it reach operating temperature, then inspect for any leaks.
